Summer Trends -- Braided Bags

This season has witnessed the appearance of a few really unexpected trends like paisley, glam sportswear and even braided bags.
Braids decorate bags of all types – large suitcases, totes, handbags and even clutches. They come in a variety of colors and either complement the design of a bag or make it totally unique.
Braids come both tiny and delicate like on Diane Von Furstenberg and Burberry Prorsum’s bags where braids serve more like details, or bold and statement like on Dolce & Gabbana pieces where braids are the focus of the accessory.

London's love for Hermes

Founded in Paris in 1837, Hermes is an unlikely contender for the title of London’s best-loved leather label. Since arriving in London in the early 20th century, “a little something from Hermes” — be it a Kelly (named after Grace Kelly), a Birkin (after Jane Birkin) or a Constance — remains the ultimate gift for fashion lovers. A pair of leather gloves gifted to the Queen (then Princess Elizabeth) and, less romantically, a leather wheelbarrow, a gift from the Duke of Windsor to Wallis Simpson, are among items on display at the Royal Academy. The current focus of an exhibition at the Royal Academy which charts the Hermes story from horses — the brand began life as a saddlery workshop — to haute couture, Hermes remains the clear-cut favourite with the capital’s style set, who for almost a century have been happy to pay the premium required for its leathery lovelies. Yet while its importance to our French cousins is up there with Notre Dame and La Tour Eiffel, London’s love affair with the fashion house is also one that runs deep.

Hermes's 175th Anniversary: Imperial leather

Hermes is 175 this year, to celebrate, it is showcasing some of its grandest designs in London. To coincide with the exhibition, Hermès will be auctioning four specially designed Passe-Guide handbags conceived to represent England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. These are aimed neither at shrinking violets nor those aversely reactive to stereotype. The English design is embellished with a fox tail; the Irish one is crafted in emerald green crocodile and finished with a shamrock; the Scottish one features tartan, front and back, and the Welsh bag has a leather dragon dangling from its shoulder strap and a second stamped in gold where otherwise a logo might be.
The new show is nothing if not testimony to the brand's diversity – and the broad-minded thinking behind its treatment of leather in particular. Also on display is the Hermès leather interior to a Citroen 2CV. Its boot opens to reveal probably the smartest luggage – also leather – the world has ever seen. There is doubtless an injection of wit here but that does not detract from the respect for tradition that underpins the label's designs. With this in mind, technicians from Hermès' Paris workshops will be present throughout, demonstrating the art of working leather for interested parties to see up close. Those who have ever wondered how some of Hermès' most iconic bags are made will discover just how it's done here.
